Becoming a Community

I love the idea of having an Open Debate for Home. I've been waiting for something like this, and it's finally here. So first things first: I am very glad to see it, and hope to see it come to fruition.

The point of the Home Open Debate, is to make Home better all around. This regards the System of Home as well as the Users of the System.

What I'd like to see happen from the Home Open Debates, is just that: an improvement of Home. From the start of Home to today, my focus has changed from trying hard to help make Home a better place through suggestions and through actually beta testing home all directed to the Home Team, to now focusing on the community of Home itself

Let's face it, there are tons of things wrong with the System of Home (Glitches, delays, misunderstanding of messages, and major communication issues between the Home Team and the community). In multiple forum posts I've shown how I've had HUGE expectations and hopes for home (probably more than Phil Harrison even), and have yet to see them myself, and have been disappointed in that. However, we can bring those issues to light and that's about all we can do. After that it's in the hands of the Home Team. If they  struggle to "get their act together" so to speak with all the technical issues and whatnot, then I figure why can't the community work on getting its own act together in the meantime?

So that's what I'd like to see first and foremost as a result of the Home Open Debates: The community getting its act together and becoming an actual community. In all the time I've been in the PS Forums (Since 2002, Reverend_M is my third account), I've definitely seen a change occur. It was gradual at first, but then it seems to have snowballed out of control in the past year especially. This is mostly found in the Home Forum itself of course (though it's relatively new, it's been through changes too). It's turned from simply being a place where gamers came together, to a huge mosh pit of chaos. Of course I think the whole deal about what Home actually is, is partially the cause of that. Home isn't just bringing gamers together. Home is bringing people all over the place, gamers and non-gamers, into the same place. I know several people who go on home, yet don't play video games. So because of the increased diversity of people being brought together, it tends to cause issues a bit more extreme than the other parts of the PS Forums. We have to be honest with ourselves: In it's current state the community is not very friendly overall. It's friendlier on home than in the forums, but still... I believe this is what needs to be worked on and I hope that the Debates will help bring it about first and foremost. Granted, if you ask around, you will probably find a decent number of individuals who will admit that they actually LIKE to bring the chaos, anger, and trouble, and actually prefer to have things heated and all that stuff. That's true . . . that's why Jerry Springer was so popular afterall. But those individuals can't be told to tone down the strife because it's a game to them to see how much they can cause. Instead, the rest of us will have to learn not to let them push our buttons or drag us into the mire along with them. We'll simply continue to carry on doing what we should.

Home
is all about the community. That's the best thing about home! Yet . . . it's also the worst!! One thing these debates WILL help, is to bring a voice to the community. Right now as it is, the forums and other means of communicating our pleasures and displeasures in the service, is like a huge crowd all yelling at the same time. Some are yelling at the Home Team to get their attention, and many are simply yelling at each other. Then those yelling at the Home Team seem to have about a thousand different things being said at once. All in all . . . it's a huge mess of yelling to where NO ONE is heard! Therefore it does more harm than good to the whole thing! Imagine being in a room with just 25 people all talking at once to you, and all at a fairly loud volume. Can you make anything out? Hardly! That's how it seems to be right now. One giant mosh pit where everyone is yelling, some at the right ones, others at the wrong ones, and no one seems to stop a while and get organized. So the Home Open Debates will aim to give the community a VOICE that can actually be heard. A moment to organize thoughts, and work together instead of against each other to bring about change in Home.

One thing
needing to be remembered also is this: Real People use Home. And when you get involved with Real People, you involve something we know as Personalities! And Let's face it, personalities clash! There's absolutely no way of avoiding that. It'll also happen with the debates, so of course not everything will be rainbows and fairies. However, the only thing that becomes a problem is when one personality causes someone to attack another person. THAT, is what needs to be put to an end. We all want Home to be better. Therefore, we need to realize that despite our different personalities, we can and should work together for the improvement of Home (both the system and the community). That means also that we must take other people's personalities into consideration. When they say one thing, we may take it entirely differently from what they actually mean. Therefore part of the improvement of the community is to learn to consider others and not just our own personal selves. Again, Home is entirely about the Community. Without a good community, even a glitch-free Home will be an absolute failure. We can't do much to fix the system of Home beside address the issues and make our voices known to the ones who CAN fix it. However, we DO have the power to fix the community part of home. It won't be easy. It won't happen overnight. However, that's where the word diligence comes into play. We need to work together and keep working together, for as long as it takes to get progress. It'll be worth it, Trust me! So, that's another thing the Home Open Debates aim to do: Help us to consider others instead of just ourselves, and realizing there are different personalities for each person.

I find that in the forums and in Home, a lot of judgmentalism goes on. Those who've read my posts have
probably heard me say this SO many times, but it's true. People label others far too often, and far too quickly. I'll give you an example. When I first started this account, Reverend_M, I had a person label me as a child predator in the forums because I disagreed with them on something. So they spread a few threads about me like that. Now those who knew me well enough just let the threads fall into the abyss and kept on having some fun right along side me. Fast forward I have people seeing my account name and judging me by that alone, calling me judgmental, hateful, proselitizer, Bible-Thumper, and MANY worse names all before I even spoke a word to them. Of course, when I did speak, they were just about ready to yell RAPE and started once again blacklisting me in the support forums and to mods saying I was "preaching" to them and being very "condescending" to them. Now those who know me know well enough. People see default clothing in home and ignore the person, are report happy for simply their saying the default "Hello," or think they're instantly a perv. Then the opposite happens and people think those who dress up are stuck up or something. Some have seemed to act like all people who use the PS forums are (forgive me for using the word) "elite" even! So the Home Open Debates, hopefully will aim also to get rid of all the judgmental attitudes that have a major presence in Home and the Forums.

When we realize all those things, we realize that we all are aiming for the improvement of home.
Some do it in ways we wouldn't consider. Others do it in ways that actually are detrimental and end up making matters worse. But when we get together to talk in a civil manner, we can come to an agreement on working together to improve the community of home. When the community improves, we can then speak with a loud, clear voice that will actually be heard, and bring to light the issues of the system of Home.

We all want the same thing. So therefore, let's all work together for the same goal. Instead of everyone individually trying to go about that goal in their own selfish way and taking out anyone who gets in their way, we need to stop, listen to each other, and figure out how to work together in unity. A mosh pit of yelling people who attack each other can turn into a largest, organized band who is heard loud and clear all around the world. Each person having their own personality and part, but working together with the others.

After reading the other posts on the blog below, I figure that they already said other points and I say I agree! So I won't get into talking about constructive criticism versus complaining, or flaming versus disagreeing, and so forth. All I say is, "QFT," I agree! Besides, I'm sure my book has given you enough eyestrain already! I hope to see you all in the forums, and in Home!

And I hope you can add your own support in bringing improvement to Home!
