Many of you may not know me, but I am an avid Home user and post on the forums when I have time (which is limited). If you have ever read the “Night Owls” thread, I’m in there every week during maintenance. Anyway on to what this post is about, the Home Open Debates. In my opinion the Home Open Debates (HOD), have two main missions. 1, to see that the community is brought together and 2, to see that Home is made a better place for all. I’m sure that is what we all really want, but changes are going to be hard for some. I hope we can set aside our differences and reach these common goals.
I would like to start off by saying that we, as Home users, have a great community. We have so many people that bring so many unique things to Home and the forums and we have the potential to do great things.
Now I’m not saying that we are great at letting all these people and ideas be heard. Some of us seem to just post to disagree with others. We need to put the negativity to rest. We need to follow the old saying, “If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all”. I have seen many new comers (from Christmas season) look to the forums as a place to let their ideas be heard, only to have their hopes buried by the negativity. But, on the other side of things, if we only said what a great idea someone had, and never really disagreed with anything, we would still be back where we were 1 year ago, with little happening in Home and nothing spectacular on the horizon. I will admit the first month of open beta was terribly boring. We need to bring constructive criticism and refine the ideas that people have. I do not know of anything within Home, or anywhere, that was created from an original idea from one person. We add to ideas, and take away from ideas, and create totally new ideas from what one person says. This is a natural creative process that has lead Home to be where it is today. Without the communities input, the HCM’s and Home Dev’s would just be pumping out the same thing every week, in a different color of course (who doesn’t love T-Shirts though). But when we drown those new ideas in the drama and negativity, the HCM’s don’t even want to read through and try to find the great ideas that everyone has. The HCM’s have all but left the forums entirely because of us.
As I read through the Home boards tonight, I see 8 negative threads about Home, and how it’s not like the Sims or someone complaining about the smile of the avatars, or someone wanting the block list to be bigger. This just shows me that we have no idea what we want to see in Home, but only what we don’t want to see in Home. I’m not saying Home is perfect, but only so much can be done at one time. Most of these negative things have been discussed so many times and they just bring out the negativity in everyone, and then everything snowballs out of control. So out of the 15 non-stickied threads on the front page, there are 8 negative threads. What does that show about our community? Is this how we want to be portrayed? When a new user comes along to ask a question, someone always seem to just say “use the search at the bottom of the page”, or something condescending about the person asking the question and how stupid they are. Why not, instead of being so negative, just answer the question posted by the user, and then explain to them that there is a search feature. Not everyone is this way, and there are some great people out there that are always helpful, but we should all strive to be this way.
If I were new to PS3 and Home, and saw what a mess these boards were, I would not ever want to come back. And with those people that leave and never come back, goes great ideas and new creative thinking. Let’s all be more constructive and help everyone out. Then, maybe if we all can do this together as a community, the HCM’s will eventually come back and Home will improve significantly for it. We drove the HCM’s away, so let’s show them we want them back.
I’m not saying that we need the HCM’s to get anything done in Home, but they act as a great communications link between the developers and us, the community and users of Home. Let’s not lose them forever, because then we will have lost what we want most, for Home to succeed.
Along with all the negativity that needs to stop, we need to stop saying something is a great idea because of who posted it. What if the forums were completely anonymous, would most of us be there, think about it, I’m sure the answer is, no, we would not be there. For some, without their name on something, they don’t feel like they have contributed and don’t feel like they should even post there good ideas. With this also beings up the fact that some people just get kudos because of who they are. (more on elitism later) This needs to also come to a stop. In my opinion the kudos system is a complete waste in the Home forum now. Kudos are for good ideas, not personal stories about why you like home and what it has given to you. This quote is from the Kudos FAQ on the forums, “When you give Kudos to a message, you are offering a thumbs up for good content and a pat on the back to its author. Your Kudos help to boost the value of certain messages and enhance the reputation of their authors.” This is what kudos are about, nothing more. We should boost the value of ideas, not people’s ego. I challenge all of you to think before you click that kudos button and try to come up with a reason of why you are clicking it. If you can’t come up with a valid reason, then don’t click it.
Well that was a long rant, but it’s over. Now on to this Home Open Debate thing, HOD for short (The names not that bad CRUNKRIS)
If we are ever going to get anywhere with anything, we need to bring an end to all the “elite” talk and just talk as a group of Home users. This great product has brought us all together, and no matter what we do in real life, what we act like, or how old we are, we all have something in common, Home. I remember back to when closed beta was happening and everyone was thinking about how much potential home had, and how it was going to be amazing from day one, and it would never be bad. Well as with anything new, there will be rough spots. And these rough spots have torn apart our community. We need to reform back together as one, and the HOD probably have the best chance to get most everyone back together. No more name calling, no more questions of which mod to you hang out with, just normal users that can hang out and have fun. These open debates will allow the Home users to talk with other Home users so that we can all set aside our differences and come to an agreement, and show that we all really just want the same thing, for Home to be successful.
I call on all Home users and Forum goers to work together and show the HCM’s and Sony that we can get along and that we do want Home to be great. Let’s all set aside our differences and let Home be our main focus from here on out. We can be one and Home will be great.
